THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD

Paniel E. Joseph

Summary

  • Read like a bland timeline of events. I was really hoping for more 'punch' or analysis / insights. I just did not get caught up with the story.

Memorable Parts

  • "'The gentleman you knew as Malcolm X,' announced the Columbia Presbyterian physician, 'is dead'."

  • "'I often think, sir, that in 1946, I was sentenced to 8 to 10 years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a common thief who had never passed the eight grade,' he reminded Haley. 'And the next time I went back to Cambridge was in March 1961, as the guest speaker at the Harvard Law School Forum'."

  • "Raising enough money to maintain the SCLC's annual expenses of $84,000 required King to conduct grueling speaking tours, sometimes delivering five speeches in one day."

  • "King preached his first sermon as Dexter's full-time pastor in May, the same month as the Brown Supreme Court decision and shortly before Malcom X arrived in Harlem to preside over Temple No. 7."

  • "When Malcolm X was allowed into the hospital to see Hinton, he turned to the crow and, with a single wave of his hand, dispersed the Muslim battalion, with bystanders soon following. 'Mr. Hicks,' the inspector reportedly said, 'that's too much power for one man to have.'"

TAKING THE WORK OUT OF NETWORKING

Karen Wickre

Summary

  • The book has valuable content and advice but it was written in 2018 - many of the tools and social media recommendations are obviously outdated. I would look for a more recent publication on the topic.

Memorable Parts

  • "The easiest thing is to react. The second easiest thing is to respond. But the hardest thing is to initiate."

  • "A solid email should restablish your connect with to the askee, offer specific reasons and context for considering this introduction, vouch for the person who is asking and make clear that nothing happens without the askee's okay up front."

  • "If you can approach networking based on what you can give someone else, it lesses the akwardness you may feel about what you need. There will be times when you do need new ideas, introductions, guidance - we all do."

  • "Be open. Pick your favorite: both Robert De Niro and Smash Mouth are credited with saying, 'If you don't go, you'll never know'."

  • "Friends sometimes say that I 'know everyone.' That's not true, of course - but I do have a good sense of who everyone is. In other words, I remember names and connections."
